Ya, its kind of tha flavor of the year. I can only hope this dies off, call me anit socal, I go out in the woods to be away from people. ok Im a hypocrite, I have my partners, but thats it. Im the one running away from you at the crag.pigsteak wrote:
usccabum, I have found that the "number chasing" is just as bad with boulderers as it is with spoorties. It is really more about the person, and their desires. Bouldering is such the flavor of the year right now. maybe it is becasue so many poeple like to be high or drunk while climibng, and the risk of doing so is less with bouldering.
The number chasing runs through all aspects of climbing. My personal oppinoin is that boulderers and sport climbers both chase numbers compusivly. Unfortinutly i came into the sport inside a gym, and it was all bout the #. I learnd from those who chased 5.? or V?. they told me the only way to get beter was to work threw the grades. now three years later, a # is well...
I guss what Im trying to say is that when Im alone in the woods with my boulders and a few frinds(3) pulling on grips and getting blown a number dosnt mater. At a sport area ( any place) I would hear 5 this and 5 that. Its conversation
So in short people chase numbers we are all guilty. I guss I just learnd from and hung out with the wrong crowd.
and one last thing Ill climb stoned, only cliping bolts, and with my trusted Partner Hashplant5. Ill be fine
P.s. first rant. good ?
Kali Mist grows into tall, running, classically sativa plants with very few leaves. This strain produces dense clusters of full fluffy buds, producing much higher yields than you would expect.
good rant. let me go a step further. learning from these number chasers was not the "wrong" crowd. that is the tendency today, to now bad mouth the number chasers. their pursuit is no more pure or no more evil than your solo walk thru the woods. just different. just because we don't subscribe to a certain "angle" on the game does not make it inferior.
so instead of bad mouthing those who taught you the ropes so many years ago (you said three?), instead thank them for introducing you to the sport you love.

a few thoughts: i climb for numbers. and i have no qualms about it because i climb for me and i bet you already judged me for "climbing for numbers". the "numbers" we use are a universal (if somewhat inconsistent) way of measuring the difficulty of a climb. now, go out west and they seem to get even harder. go to rifle climbing 11s and flailling on 12s and you're not going to have a super time. i can tell you because that's what i did (though the people were stellar). i'd like to climb harder so that i can climb in more places and climb more things. i personally like the moves more on harder climbs. and i like climbing at my limit and seeing improvement (eg: getting strong with a move, getting more efficient, seeing things better, more confidence with my abilities, etc), which indirectly ends up looking like "climbing for the numbers". so before you throw out wholesale everyone who's a "numbers climber" into the dung heap of sticking "ethics" and take a second to find out why they climb for the numbers.
second, you mention ethics and i've talked about ethics myself in the past. i've been thinking about them more lately and i've started to realize something. who cares?! if people climb differently, what does it matter to you? so what if they rub it in your face that they can redpoint harder than you even when you know they did something "unethical" like didn't hang the draws or when a different way or something of the sort? do you really need to justify to them that you can climb harder? does it make you feel better? to a large degree, crying about ethics seems like another way to create a basis for comparison. if everyone adheres to the same ethics set, then you can compare how hard you climb to them. it's one way for people to try to compare their own accomplishments against others and try to make themselves feel better.
climb for yourself, yourself only, and enjoy it. if someone won't stop spraying about how much better they are then you, give them a pat on the back, say congrats, and quietly pity them.

paul, you really thought the numbers out west were harder? I lived in Colorado for a year, and when I came back East, I felt the other way. Especially at my home crag in So Ill..but perhaps the whole thing is that whatever type of rock we get used to feels easier, so getting on unfamiliar rock always seems a bit easier.

Im not trying to bad mouth the people who taught me the ropes, just upset that they tried to tell me the only point in climbing was to climb hard grades thats all. I still climb in that same gym today with the same people. I just got sick of being asked did you redpoint a 12 yet, and I got that alot. I hold nothing agenst people who climb for the grade. its such and individual sport, climb for you and only you.
Paul3eb, I dont think I mentiond "Ethics" but could be wrong. I could care less how a person climbs. As long as a person dosnt fuck up the rock via, chipping, bolt on holds, wire brushes...
Sorry if I pissed anyone off. That was not my intintion Feel free to PM qustions to me, I dont bite![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

I have the same approach to climbing as I had for golf: If I'm not having fun, I pack my bags and go home. There have been a few times where I would come into the gym to climb or boulder, be there for 10 - 15 minutes and turn around and leave. I just wasn't in the mood to climb.
For me, life is way to short to be doing something you don't enjoy. If you aren't enjoying what you're doing, find something better to do!

CWG, how sweet. Do you like doing dishes? Laundry? Getting the oil changed? Fixing a flat? Saying no to that last beer? Saying no to an extra helping of mashed potatos? I respectfully disagree. Life is not always about having fun. There is also reality to contend with. Now if you are talking specifically about a hobby or diversion activity, which for 99% of us climbing falls into, then cool. But even then, there are times when it isn't "fun". Sometimes better lessons are realized thru our failures, and those aren't always fun. If people can't wait for the weekend because they hate their job that much, then I would agree they need to find something new.
