I suggest learning how to stir fry. My suggestion is the Betty Crocker stir fry cook book to learn how it works. It sounds gay but I promise all the recipes are excellent. After you've made ten or fifteen different stir fries you'll understand how to do it and can just make it up from the ingredients at hand. You can make huge meals for very cheap and they're generally (stay away from the sweet 'n' sour stuff like I'm making tonight
) very healthy and with a little practice your meals will be far better than any take-out Chinese you've ever had. You'll need a good wok (heavy carbon steel is the way to go, fuck that non-stick bullshit), and a steady supply of rice, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and vegetable oil. I got through two years of college cooking like that and ended up attracting a regular group of eaters that basically paid for my food. I also ran a deli out of my dorm room for a year which paid for all my food, beer, dope, and books but that's a completely different scenario.

Borrow your moms crockpot, heck she will prolly give it to you cause she never uses it. Fill it with veggies and some meat and let it cook all day while you are at work or wherever.Toss it in a thermos for on the go food. Some bulion cubes will give it even more flavor.

I think your comment about observing the food pyramid is right on target. If you really don't have a lot of money, unprepared foods are a good buy. Instead of canned beans, cook them up yourself. Lots of protein, not much fat. And yes to the fruits and veggies. Two servings each per day. You might also want to watch protein, carb, and fat percentages of your daily caloric intake. Carbs (balance complex and simple) should be about half, with fat and protein a quarter each.
Cheap food can provide a good diet.
And occasionally say hell with all that and eat a big fat slop burger with large fries and a shake.
Good luck, ZSpider
