i think the door frame should be strong enough. it should have a double header over it (i think that is the right terminology). door frames are always beefy. i would avoid mounting it on the trim (ah, yeah).
another trick that is slightly less visually obtrusive is using the same idea of two sandwich boards (the hang board mounted to one board and the other mate board on the other side of the door frame) rest the sandwich boards on the trim, then drill a 3/8" or 1/2" hole through the snadwich pieces. Drill one of these holes on either side of the hang board mounting board through the door frame to its mate sandwich piece on the other side of the door frame. Thread a piece of 3/8 " all thread through the holes and using big washers to distirbute the force, torque on nuts and squeeze the door frame between the two pieces.
if you use finsh ply wood and finish the edges with birch iron on strips that obscure the ply, it actually looks rather handsome. This is coming from someone who thinks shiney bolts and hangers a beautiful.
