I can never read the route names and grades in the PDFs using the linux acroread.
Unable to find or create the font "Verdana,Italic'
I could probably figure out how to get this font but it might be good to use a more common font.
As far as too many links on the main page it seems the best thing would be to have a single link and separate page for the mini-guides.

I can see it now, like a Star Trek episode, speaking to your PDA, "Computer, tell me how to get to the base of the Quest and what gear I'll need."
"Be responsible for your actions and sensitive to the concerns of other visitors and land managers. ... Your reward is the opportunity to climb in one of the most beautiful areas in this part of the country." John H. Bronaugh
I've been trying to help on the map front - making good maps is time consuming!marathonmedic wrote:I'd like to see more maps in the mini-guides as long as there's no copyright problems. Or how about a pdf of just maps since you can already download the entire guidebook in a single file for PDA viewing?
The PDF on PDA thing is sub-optimal. When you transfer the file to the PDA, the Acrobat for PDA tool does some sort of translation to it. I've messed around a bit with it, and I haven't been able to get good results either. I just got access to Acrobat Pro, so I'll try to find some time to see if it has some PDA specific features. For now, I'm sticking with the raw text version for the PDA.Rain Man wrote:I'm still trying to get the .pdf files to work/properly display (read fit the screen) on my PDA using Adobe for pocket PC. I think the file might need to be saved on a more current version of Adobe, or maybe even specific to the PDA format. I don't know, but that's my ideal...have the whole guidbook available whenever, whereever.
Veranda is a super-common font on Windows - I'm surprised that there isn't an imitation for Linux (but from the little I've heard, there are a lot of font issues on Linux. It took years for Windows to catch up to the Mac's font handling, and it will take a lot of work for Linux to catch up also) There's supposed to be a pdf2html tool out there to view PDFs in a web browser.Danny wrote:I can never read the route names and grades in the PDFs using the linux acroread.

That sounds like a great idea - put one link on the front page for printable guides, then a page that covers them.
Ray - in case I wasn't clear, feel free to include my overview map in anything you want! (Plus I may have some time next week to update it - like fixing the 'marimba' issue!)

I can pull up the pda maps on my Palm, but the image is still really small and it's hard to make out the numbers. For me nothing seems to beat having the drawing of each crag with numbers pointing to each route so I don't get mixed up. Either that or someone who actually knows what they're talking about telling me which is which.
Ticking is gym climbing outdoors.
Cool, thanks everyone for the input. This lets me know where to focus my efforts.
Again, if anyone wants to do some topos of the crags or more maps.....feel free. My idea is to make this guide more and more of a collaborative effort.
