Um, if you opened any spam and/or clicked on any links, your address is now on the market, and you will be getting more. The spammers embed graphics and links in email that let them know if it was opened, same with clicking on a link.

Oh, and NEVER, EVER click on the "opt out" link - as you will really get spammed then.

some addresses are just guesses. If a spammer finds that "fred228@yahoo.com" is a 'live' address, then they will try "fred227" and "fred229" (along with thousands of other names/numbers). It is infinitely cheap for them to try lots and lots of guesses, so they do. When someone 'views' a spam in their e-mail program, the fact that a given banner or photo was loaded off their servers tells them that the address is 'live' and voila! you've got spam-o-rama!

While the spammers themselves bear final responsiblity, let's remember to blame the f#$@ing idiots who actually buy crap from spam for perpetuating it! You are getting an ad for a $100 bottle of schlong growth pills because a few morons actually tried ordering some! grrrrrrrrrrr!

(Oh, yes: on the strange "doing something about it" tip: I use the Mac OS mail program which has really good (~95% accuracy for me) spam filtering. Does anyone have any suggestions for Windows spam filtering? Nothing is perfect, but the more that is filtered the better.)

Artsay, I would say that's not your problem, it's Ray's.
Actually, G, from a girl's perspective, it would definitely be Artsay's problem! :(

tomd: Try Thunderbird from the mozilla group. I've heard good things about it. Too bad I can't use it to really let you know, our spam filter on the mail server is really good. <gloat> Almost 7 years with this address and only about a dozen pieces of spam total. </gloat>
