I don't think it has anything to do with the oil companies. It probably has EVERYTHING to do with with people seeing a lot of out of state traffic on some backroads and some one grabbing opportunities to take other people's stuff...

Charmane Oil wouldn't advocate breaking into cars. Break-ins have more to do with repressed rural economics and morals within the region. There are not many good jobs to go around in the gorge economic area outside of couny work, oil companies, rural farming or illegal stuff. It's not right to steal but that's my take on the causes of it.

"Repressed rural economics" would indicate lots of items being taken from the cars which people are saying did not happen.

How many incidents have involved vehicles with Kentucky plates and how many with out of state plates?

I wouldn't be too surprised if out of state cars are more likely to be targeted.

There are some nice cars parked down there. On a little out of the way road these cars a bit out of place and seem like easy pickins to me.
I am really sorry to hear that Air Canada's car was hit. Bummer for him and his ride.
I'd say, but a p.o.s. (about $2-3,000 max) and use it for a crag mobile. Seriously. Leave the windows down and let hollar rats do what they will.

On the suck forum thread, someone said that some door handles were yanked off and that some locks were messed with. This sounds like f**king around/vandalism rather than real for-profit theft. Real car break-in theives just pop a window with a bit of pipe or a crowbar, then reach in and unlock the door and clean the thing out and move on to the next one. When you're doing it for a living you do it well, redneck or not. I don't know about "rural morals", but this could easily be pissed-off, bored locals messing with the wierdo climbers.

Either way, no one needs to be hiding out with projectile weapons escalating things. Maybe we should try to organize some sort of visible presence in the lots that have been targeted for break-ins before, like Roadside and the Motherlode. No guns or clubs, just people being visible so that the theives/vandals won't feel that no one is paying attention.

This wasn't really a 'professional' job, but the people doing it could easily become much more proficient at it given a bit more practice. They saw an opportunity, and took it.
I'd left my car unlocked, just in case something like this happened, but hadn't cleaned out my car thoroughly enough. Probably avoided damage to my car, at least.

I used to put a confederate flag and NRA sticker on my window. It seemed to work. I have not been broken into once and I have parked in some sketchy areas.
