The ban says Chimney Top Overlook. I think most of the routes are not at the overlook. Seems to me the ban would only include Chimney's Chimney, Tunnel Route, and The Prow.

Don't be a chimney-snob, Jesse. :)

Check Canopy (5.7**) is on my hit-list. And have you seen Last Day? Looks stellar, but what is the reason for the R rating and how difficult is the climbing through the R section?

OK, so here I am promoting my own route again, but Last Day is stellar. As I remember it the R stuff is about 5.8 to 5.8+? You might want to get some more opinions, but if you can do the OW crux (well protected) the R stuff probably won't be a problem.

I didn't have much of a problem with the seasonal closure of Chimney Top Overlook, after all it would be a bummer to catch a trash can in the head, but it is so disappointing that The Prow is permanently off limits. Any of you ever do it? The position is killer! One of the airiest routes in the area for sure.

I saw somebody climbing the chimney solo a couple months ago.

Yeah, Larry, Last Day is a good route. I think the R is probably a bit old school R due to the wide section. Now that everyone has fat cams, it's problaby no big deal.

If you want to be sure whether a route is closed, call the Stanton Ranger Dist. and ask them about specific routes. They probably won't know, but if you can get them to say it covers routes that are directly below the fenced overlook, then the majority of routes would still be open.

Or just don't top out so the tourists don't see you and get ideas.
