This is the weirdest part. The charge on my card was placed by a legitimate newspaper in South Carolina. The payment was for a classified ad placed in their newspaper; not for a purchase of anything valuable. WTF? The newspaper said they are crediting back the charge to my account; which is now locked... figures. Anyway, I'm not out anything it seems. Just wondering why someone would go to the trouble of stealing my information, then not just pocketing the money, or buying something worth having. I'm lookling into that one time use thing.

I know this probably isn't the right way to go...but I tell my bank and credit people that I've lost my card ever so often to get new numbers...
after all the charges they've ever done I think they can afford to send me a new card and run me a new #.

overhung: Think about it. There are reasons that someone would want to hide their identity in posting a personal...drugs...terrorism...illegal sexual behaviors, etc. They can use the personals to send messages.

I don't know if any of you guys use Old Nation Bank, I do... they have a pretty good security personel. This summer me and Matt Reine went on a climbing trip over a weekend. Before I left on Friday I used my card in Evansville, Indiana... Later that night and through Saturday I used it In Clarksville, TN. On Sunday I used it once in Clarksville, then went to Dawson Springs, KY and used it, and again in Evansville later that night. When I went to use it on Monday morning Old National had locked my account. Around 10am Monday I recieved a call from Old National Bank security... they thought someone had gotten ahold of my card. I thanked them, even though it was a little trouble not being able to use my card on Monday mornign, it was well worth the safety messure.

when I ordered Odub's CD from his link, my cc co. called me to ask me if it was really me ordering that garbage, or if someone had stolen my card.
Seriously, they called me on an $8.50 charge! They've called me on other occasions as well, as any good company will when a purchase or purchases stray from what is typical on your account. I just don't know what about that order triggered them.

Now that is funny shit. I hope you had parental consent before ordering Sandy?

Seriously, when they told me they traced the transaction to a phone number in Boston, then some foriegn guy answers and claims to be me, I thought about the terrorism connection. But, what are the odds? That's scary shit. My bank asked me some other things to look into, such as identity theft. But hell, no thief in his right mind would want my identity.

No fun! I'm always careful about my internet purchases, but still got burned last year right before Christmas when someone stole a reissued credit card out of the mail, which I wasn't even expecting because they sent it a few months early.
I hadn't used the card in over a year, so received a note about it from the credit card company, along with a bill for over a thousand dollars. There were 3 large purchases from places like wal-mart in a nearby city, and one little $25 one at the end at a gas station. Jerks.
Calling the company about it was a slightly worrisome event. They asked me for my "password" which I didn't know. The lady said, "I'll give you a hint... it starts with a 3." WHAT? "It looks like an address..." Oh that was helpful. I wonder if she was so helpful to the folks who took and somehow managed to verify my card...
(They did believe that it was fraud, so just let me cancel the card. No harm done.)
