What is the etymology of this usage of "spray"? Is it because it's similar to what a skunk or unneutered male cat does to its territory? Or is it because you're in my face and I'm showering in your spit? Is it gentle like a warm rain or painful like a firehose? Is it cold like a splash of the Red River right about now (yikes!) or warm, like a puppy?... a wet puppy?... a warm, wet puppy?
Is there a climber language thread yet? I'm curious about words like "choss" and "bomber." Not only what the origin is but how people would actually define them.
Ok, I'm a geek.

See? The question I've got is why did the word "beta" start to get used for food?...
Wait, that's not right. Advice. Yeah.

This is just my own speculation...Alan Evil wrote:What is the etymology of this usage of "spray"? Is it because it's similar to what a skunk or unneutered male cat does to its territory? Why the word "spray"? Because you're spouting forth a steady stream of words (usually in the form of bragging, but that's another topic).
Why the word "bomber"? I read somewhere once that "bomber" comes from "bomb proof," as in a bomb could go off and that hold/foot/bolt/piece would still hold.
Not sure about "choss"...
Paul3eb and meetVA and I had a discussion about "beta"... Paul thought it came from the wolf heirarchy, as in there's the Alpha male and he's leading all the rest of the Beta males? I thought of it from a more IT point of view, like the "beta release" of a piece of software... kind of like your sequence is in progress, in the making, so it's in "beta," or that you need beta in order to piece it all together.

As you have cast aside my poetic images of "spray" we'll just leave it alone...
I like "bomb proof" for bomber. That works.
Beta... Here's my image:
Two climbers, one belaying, the other at the crux of an impossible move. The climbing climber says, "I need some data, here."
To which the belaying climber says, "Dude. You need better than that. You need Beta."
The end.

Beta relates to video.
I know you guys are too young to remember, but when vcrs and video tape first came out there were two formats, betamax and vhs. Vhs won out over beta.
So you get the word beta which kinda ties route info to information that is kinda like watching a tape.
Anyone want to talk about 8-track players?
