And I also trad climb. And multi pitch. And have even done a 14er once
Since I started climbing there's been 3 deaths in RRG - all of whom were people I would not have thought would have died.
Kiddos on the way make you more responsible since they need to be provided for no matter what happens to us.

I had health insurance that once specific my policy would be null if I didn't disclose a whole bunch of activities that I actually had a fondness for (and made me a healthier person!). However, when it came to rock climbing I was primarily a boulderer at the time and they specified "mountain climbing." For once I agree with all of my climbing friends...not the same thing.

If you don't go with AAC, I have a friend who works for Northwestern and I can connect you two. She's in here in Lexington.

I'm actually a licensed life and health insurance broker, but unfortunately have been out of the business for a few years. Any insurance company will insure you, but you will have to disclose that you climb, unless you don't think you'll die climbing within the next two years. After two years you are in the incontestability stage of the contract, which means that anything not disclosed on the application is incontestable after two years. So it's really up to you what you want to tell your provider. I would check with several companies before making a decision, as prices, duration of coverage, and underwriting are all different with each company. If you need some help just give me a shout, and I'll do my best to send you in the right direction. Insurance can be quite complicated, and I hate to see people mislead by the different agents/brokers out there. I have no affiliation with anyone and would be more than happy to help you through the process.

Thanks clifton!
It's kinda hard to NOT disclose I climb when if you google my name that's all that comes up!
I think we're going to get a few quotes next week and see how we do. It's pretty obvious that my desire for whole life policies is completely out of my price range! Incidentally the quotes from the AAC came back pretty high so it looks like I'm going to do better with some other companies.

If you were looking at whole life, you might want to look into a term policy with a return of premium option. It's a little more expensive than straight term insurance, but you get back all premiums paid at the end of the term.

+1 for AAC life insurance. I got a great term policy that saved me about $60/mo.

we looked at the return of premium option and it didn't make much financial sense. whole life was way too expensive (like several thousand a month expensive!). we found a good term policy using a broker - theirs was cheaper than the AAC. this is the only time when i really hope i'm throwing my money away!
