It's a different experience. I enjoy what's required of me when climbing alone. Typically I run a very simple system (for top rope solo) of a grigri and perhaps some overhand knots as backup.
I don't like the teeth on the mini/micro since I use this system a lot. Also, for me, pulling slack through the device doesn't detract from the experience.

Maybe read this trip report, if it grabs you.. try it. It's one of my favorites (published in the summer).

That's pretty intense.

I use one mini
one ropeman trailing on a 12" sling
old lead line

And like 2 slings plus grigri for the changeover and rap.
