What route are you going up on Mt Whitney? I am doing the East Buttress in summer of 2012 for a warm up and to acclimate for our main objective.

The permit system is changing this year to an online system. The quota for the technical climbs is 10 people per day.

look at it from the road, roll you pant legs up and walk straight to it.

Park at the gladie visitor center, and walk the grassy field behind it until you hit the river. Walk down stream ( take a right) until you hit the larger river. Cross the smaller creek here. Can be deep now and after a rain. Once on the other side walk up stream of the smaller creek for about 200 yard, stay on the bank of the creek. You will come to a sandy spot and the you will head up the hill on a small trail. It goes almost straight up the hill and you will run right into diamond in the crack.

an alternate rout is to start at the princes arch tail head. Walk down the road 30 ft until you get to an unmarked trail that turns quickly into a giant overused campsite. follow the trail about 50 ft past the campsite til you reach the top of a hill, look for a faint trail on the left that takes you to the top of a lower ridge. once on the (slightly) lower ridge, follow the trail 20 ft or so until the first valley, go down into the valley, stay on the left side, at the mouth of the valley look left, you'll see it, then B-line.

The first time I did it was in the summer. I crossed in the right place, but then went straight up hill until I hit the cliff and then walked left. This SUCKED! I was so sweaty and dirty by the time I found it, that the climb felt like the easiest part of the day. Also, we parked at the bridge and walked the random field. Got soaked by the dew from the grass. I have given a few other people the directions I gave you and they have all found it easily. Krampus's way I am sure also works...
