From New York City to the gorge, it's between 11 and 12 hours driving time. I live about 110 km outside of NYC on the way to the gorge and it takes me just about 10 hours.

If you're in NY, you gonna check out the gunks? They're in New Paltz, maybe 1 1/2 hrs out of NYC.

Don't forget your credit card at the Gunks, plan on maxing it for 3 days of climbing there.

Why's the gunks so expensive? Good name btw, the gunks.
is it sport or trad? The more psyched I get for US climbing the more climbing kit is slipping into my bag...one set of nuts, plus I might treat myself to some camelots, they've got to be cheaper than the UK.

The gunks requires you to purchase a climbing pass. $15/day, $90/yr. It's almost exclusively trad with a couple of mixed routes thrown in. Great gear shop in New Paltz called Rock and Snow. Not sure about camping since I day trip it there.

Go back to the UK and take your weather with you.

there is a campground near the gunks parking lot however it sucks.. when i went last may we could only find one camp spot that wasn't on a hill. other than that i don't think there is much camping around that area.

THe campground at the GUnks isn't so bad, especially if you have a car (there's no water there). And it is included in the price of your pass.
How long are you planning to be in the Red, Mat? And what sort of climbing are you looking to do?
