Noob rope question
Re: Noob rope question
if i could only give you 1 choice for brand and diameter, it would be a 10mm mammut rope.

kinda related so hopefully not hijacking a thread, but do most of you keep a rope log? What kind of info do you keep in the log?
read something about this once and this thread kinda jarred a memory.

most people don't keep a rope log. just inspect your rope regularly for flat spots and such.

what, are you now the rope log police? My rope log is just like my oil change log for the car...except I keep more detailed records for the rope....
example from last weekend: April 3, 2011
me and the missus (maxim 10.2) took in a show while the wife was out of town. Couldnt believe she wanted me to pay for the show, after weighing me down on my latest gnar proj. I threatened to neuter her frayed bits. She jumped back in her military issue duffle bag, and slept peafefully thru the rest of "Little Mermaid"....
keeping detailed info like this will help keep track of your ropes condition. mine needs therapy right now.
Positive vibes brah...positive vibes.

Re: Noob rope question
thanks for the info.... will probably start keeping a log of my own.
I'm buying a rope next week. doing my research now.... kinda narrowed down between a 9.8 and a 10.2 listed on REI's sight. using REI cause i have a gift card to there and I'll be staying at a hotel right next door to one in Portland when I head out there for work on Sunday. (that's NEVER good for the bank account.)

Several months ago, not knowing any better, i bought a PMI 8.1mm Dry. Only used it once, but its been explained to me since, that this rope is not safe for leading. More for ice and whatnot.
between the two links i listed, i like the look of the 9.8mm more, but the UIAA fall rating is only 5 whereas the 10.2 UIAA fall rating is 11.

oh i was looking for opinion/advice on that last post lol. apparently i forgot to put a question mark in there somewhere.
Re: Noob rope question
i've started keeping a spread sheet with when i put soft goods (rope, harnesses, etc) into service otherwise i'll have no recollection of how old they are.
Sand inhibits the production of toughtosterone, so get it out and send.
