they would if some highly motivated climber with a doctorate in leisure studies put in his resume' with the state and waited for the present guy to retire then stepped into his place. I mean what else are you going to do with a DOCTORATE in Leisure studies...what are the classes in that like...

they wouldn't do it for the same reason they don't allow it in state nature preserves. climbers would denude the land and leave less of it for future generations.

Having run the RRGCC for several years, he's quite a bit better informed on this topic than you are. Why do you want to vocally oppose climbing access there anyway? If you don't want to climb there, keep it to yourself instead of supporting this ridiculous restriction on a public forum.

to be a bit more articulate, the state park system is not in any way a "nature preserve". A nature preserve preserves, locks up, disallows all access, attempts to manage the property with out any human interference, leaves unchanged, etc...

The Ky State Park system exists as a net revenue neg expense on the State Budget dime, to provide recreational opportunities for the people of the Commonwealth. Impacts are expected and managed. Have you been to NBSP? Seen the NB? To discuss impacts in the context of the State Resort Parks is ludicrous.

for the record, I have not run the RRGCC, but been a low level functioning member twice, and briefly sat as president of the BOD, but have been informed and involved for 20+ years.

Yes, let's limit impacts in a theme park that allows private cabin rental businesses to operate within its boundaries and installed a friggin chairlift to the top of natural bridge!! What a douche indeed...

Maybe I am cynical, but I am not in favor of lowering the barrier of entry to future climbers, at least in a place like Natural Bridge. I'm not saying I'd like access restricted, but rather the ease at which one starts climbing. Do you really want the park to start renting harnesses at the shack before 1001 yahoos get on the chairlift to go to the crag?

that is an interesting thought. You are right in that it would be a disaster for that to happen. That said, I don't think the State Parks would carry access to that degree of renting harnesses and shoes like they rent paddles boats. I would like to think they would allow developement with guidelines for anchors and base hardening and then indemnify themselves from liability.
