Re: Pull ups

Post by 512OW »

I can probably do pullups in the low 30's... though I haven't tried in ages to do max pullups. I climb in the mid 13's now.

When I was a traddie, climbing low 12's, I could do 50 without issue, but I trained pullups all the time, trying to reach the goal of 100 pullups and 100 pushups in 10 minutes, which I eventually did.

Pullups are just like any other exercise... the more you do it, the better you get at it, no matter how hard you climb.

Seems like there are few guys shaped like Sharma or Huber that come out of nowhere with ridiculous ability. There do seem to be more Adam Ondra type stories.
When sharma started, he was a skinny kid. ripped, but skinny. I think anyone, anywhere, that understands the biomechanics and physiological requirements for climbing can say that finger strength to weight requirement is one of the main determinants for one's climbing level (technique aside).

When i was 19, I could do 5 one arm pull ups, 60 regular pull ups, or a mono pull up on one hand, and i couldn't do 12a. Our climbing was overhung small pockets with bad feet, so the big pull muscles rarely got used because my weak fingers and bad footwork failed first.

Now I can do between 30-40 pull ups (im guessing). I feel solid on 5.11 sport, and can walk away with the occasion low grade 13 if i bust my rear for it.

I think another cool Poll would be asking weight and climbing ability.

I've always been able to do about 10-15 pull ups no matter what grade I was at. The biggest factors I've personally noticed was general cardio and current climbing goals.

there clearly is a link....the more pullups you can do the less subtle your spray.

NICE!!

Another way to think about it is..... The kind of person that counts pull-ups is the kind of person that buys into a 12a being equal to 60 points.

Yeah, I think the fact that over 80% of the community can do 11 or more pull-ups there can be only one conclusion. We are just as adept at spraying about something as meaningless as pull-ups as we are something as meaningless as climbing. At least we are consistent!
