So, what about when it goes the other way? When the woman is the experienced climber, and the guy is the gumby. Do these relationships even last? (outside of Yasmin and David-not to knock his climbing skilz or anything, but she's fierce )
The only time this has ever happened in a relationship of mine, it didn't last. Don't know that our problems were limited to climbing, but working routes together definitely made for some tense moments, if I sent first. Luckily, don't have that problem anymore.... though I dream of out-climbing allah.

I would love if my partner could hang my draws!!! Seriously. I think it would only be hard to accept if she started of weaker and then became stronger than you during the course of your relationship.TankAzz wrote:So, what about when it goes the other way? Tank: you're too sweet
It helps that David's got his own passion, and that climbing's not his "thing," so he's always been psyched for me and was never competitive about it. Though he can out pushup and pullup me any day of the week.
I can think of 3 couples where both people climb hard, but the woman climbs harder, who've been together for years. I think with the right personalities, that dynamic can work.

Lena sport climbs way harder than me and I'm fine with it. It's good for me actually, 'cause I had pretty much been avoiding serious sport climbing for years and had plateau-d at mid-12 for over a decade... plus, she gets to hang the draws on the pumpy stuff
Re: Climbing Partner AND Significant Other?
It worked well for me until I knocked her up.
Re: Climbing Partner AND Significant Other?
my gal sport climbs harder than me and i love it! i was pretty stagnant with my climbing for a long time and, more or less, waiting for an easy exit from the lifestyle. she has been climbing for a 1/3 of the time i have but is really talented and psyched and it has rubbed off (as much as "psych" can rub off on me) on me. i've made some of my first break throughs in 6 or 7 yrs cuz of climbing with her. we do have our spats, but they are almost always due to different approaches to the activity......i've been living at miguel's/the road for years and have the tendency towards anti-psych, hate the crowds, wait till tomorrow mentality. she learned to climb in a gym in boulder and redpointed multiple 13's her second year climbing and is perma psyched and will climb with anyone in any conditions. i could use a lot more of that headspace.....

that's called 'keeping it real'.stix wrote: anti-psych, hate the crowds, wait till tomorrow mentality.
haunted.
Re: Climbing Partner AND Significant Other?
i thought i was "keeping it real" until i realized that all i was really doing was not putting in the pitches to stay fit enough to do routes anywhere near my actual limit. by changing my mindset on those days i used to write off i am able to stay fit/strong enough to climb on routes that are way more fun

Woman climbs harder versus the man climbs harder. Who cares? Isn't this a liberated egalitarian society? There should be no difference. If you are dude and you have problem with this you are one sad fuck.
