We were there today. They have Rangers sitting at the Left Flank parking lot and on the other side of the tunnel as well.

Yes, Military Wall, Left Flank & the trails to them are closed. Here is a link to the map of the closed areas - http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/newsroom/ ... letter.pdf

This does not bode well for the Military / Left Flank areas, they are going to "burn out" the fire - http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/newsroom/ ... nout.shtml
I will keep details posted as they become available to me. :(

As far as I understand, the "burn out" will only affect the forest on the west side of Hwy. 77. The area probably will be closed for a while longer though, if that's what you mean.

You are correct. The burnout will be occurring on the other side of the road. Military and Left Flank should not be affected by the burn as long as they are able to hold their control line. I will be talking to the Forest Service next week and should have a better idea of how long the closure will extend then.

I was out for a ride today and at the interstction of KY 11 and 715 I looked out and saw two massive clouds of smoke.
Image

Bobbing up and down above the ridge tops were at least two choppers fighting the fires.
Image

I stopped to shoot a photo or two and as I watched the choppers work, it dawned on me where they must be getting their water.
Image

I packed up the camera and raced down the highway to the lake. It really made it hit close to home as I stood at the launch ramp at Millcreek Lake and photographed this scene.

I'm not sure but I bet it cost several thousand tax dollars an hour for a show like this. I hope they find the ones that caused this

Thanks guys.
I can't believe how close it got to the water. It looks like just over a foot in the one shot. Whoever is at the helm of that baby must have nadds the size of Texas!
I've seen this stuff on TV all my life but when it's your canoe spot that their tapping, it makes the fires much more real. I'll see if I can get some front line shots. I have an in with some forest service workers who are putting a lot of overtime these days.
