Anyone care to guess how many times you would smack the boulder before the water?

If you're looking for DWS drive on down to Laurel Lake. Gather a crew, rent a pontoon and explore the rock between Grove Marina and Holly Bay. Tons of great stuff. Plus the water is currently pretty low so the climbing is even taller.

rastaman,
Do you know if it's legal to DWS in Laurel Lake?
bcombs,
Ya that's why I didn't top out, but then again you should be able to just kick off the boulder to miss the slab below. The very top is overhung which might actually clear the slab, but I'm guessing it doesn't. The overhung part might make it even more chancy to be able to kick yourself away from the wall since you wouldn't be kicking off a vertical wall but a slanted one.
The crux on the left side is low and totally vertical, and so that's always nice. After the crux you get to some giant pockets when it turns to slab, and so falling is no longer much of a risk.
There were plenty of overhung and vertical boulders in that area, and my guess is that there is going to be some great, safe lines out there.

I guess you're not one of my blog readers then. Nope, I'm going to work on it this fall. I'm going to keep training hard and then pull my arms out of their sockets on the onsight attempt, which of course will be on the video I'm making. I have also decided to add a bouldering trad sport project repoint flash onsight solo tree climbing video to the mix. I'll probably charge $4 for the DVD. All proceeds will go to PMRP.

It's good to see young strong people help out the climbing community. So what did you work on at Johnny and Alex day? Were you on the Sore-Heel side?

DWS and cliff jumping is legal at Laurel. Laws that apply to Grayson and Summersville don't apply at Laurel, at least not yet. A group of us were soloing/jumping off a fairly high (30'-40') cliff a couple weekends ago and the man cruised right by without stopping. There's also a few notorious cliff jumping areas that are also summer hangout spots for the locals. Guys are hanging out, jumping off cliffs every weekend and the man doesn't seem to give them any flack.
