i'll likely buy one of these, but i'll be reluctant to let anyone belay me who didn't learn on a gri-gri.

real belaying standards.

It would be nice to have something that would compete with the gri-gri and bring it's price down.

If two machines perform the same, go with the simplest.

If buying one gets me a high five and a fist bump before a climb (like in the second video), I'm all in.

I did order one of these and when I brought it to the gym where I climb in PA, most people were skeptical. After we used it for the night, everyones' opinion was changed.

Likes:
-very simple to use
-autoblocking is quick and very difficult to override
-controlled lowering. You'd have to really work to get it into a position to allow a freefall.
-very smooth feeding of rope on lead belaying
-works great with the smaller diameter ropes
-clearly displayed diagrams on the device can alert you if it is threaded incorrectly
-even threaded backwords, it works just like an ATC

Dislikes:
-Can't double rope rappel
-difficult to pull thicker ropes through

Bottom line from the feedback I've received from the people I climb with is that it's a great belay device for single pitch climbing. Everyone liked it over the gri gri because of the ease of use.

I had one at the crag over the weekend. I think my buds who tried it were favorably impressed also. I like it. Older ropes are harder to manage (buddy had a new 10.2 mm that worked fine), but my no means impossible.
