What is a Dirtbag?

the traditional view was a dirtbag was someone who had dropped out of society for one of a number of reasons: maybe lack of social skills, maybe no known marketable skills to share, maybe just a lazy doped up slacker..after these people left behind a wake of debt, pregnant women, illegal camping, incessant drinking and drug abuse, a lore followed them. it became a some what tongue in cheek symbol of going off the grid...
biggest problem with it was that dirtbags relied on those ON the grid for their free food, drug and alcohol sustenance, factory workers sweating to make the gear they used, tax payers subsidizing camp four and the entire park system, etc...
it became a viscious circle, of dirtbags falling deeper and deeper behind the curve of everyday society, but wondering why they were left to rot in their stench.
nowadays, it is all a farce. it is kids taking 18 years to finish college, and using that as an excuse for having no money. it is climbers pretending to revel in the title, but at night in their tent silently wishing they could afford a place to rent and call home. it is youngins climbing and climbing and climbing, adding nothing to the general common good of mankind.
now, if dirtbagging were to take on meaning in the form of solving a bigger world crisis, then there might be relevance..but as it is, it is a cop out, and those hangin on to it are afraid to sit alone and ponder its consequences.
PS- This is the majority view. Everyone else is afraid to say what is on their mind.

Piggie,
Some build their house out of bricks. Some build their house out of straw. I used to be jealous of those that lived the dirt bagging life. They got to play all the time and didn't have to worry about a mortgage, insurance or bills.
We could have that lifestyle too, but for most of us, the costs out weight the benefits.

Can't we all just get along?
Seems the dirtbag is glorified only by those that are unhappy with their current choices in life. Personally, I like a hot shower and a clean bed on a regular basis.
As for a definition... Just check out the urban Dictionary for variety. But to me, true dirt bag is synonymous with selfish and well, as a rule of thumb, dirty.
