Ok, the two I noticed this year-one at Torrent, near Wadcutter, behind obvious built up area meant to keep people out so that it can re-grow(meaning someone had to walk in that area to tie their deal to 2 trees as well as walking there everytime someone used the hammock). The other at the Great Wall at Muir, a pretty popular area.
I just see it as an increasingly acceptable cause of impact to already over-impacted climbing areas.
Looks like I am in the minority.
[edit] After thinking about it for 10 minutes, I did say something to the climbers @ Torrent because I didn't think Bob would be happy seeing it (prefaced with "I dont mean to be an ***hole, but")...They were cool and took it down.

Hammocks in closed erosion-recovery zones, especially at Torrent, are definitely out. Going to "Great" wall, period, is out too.

Well, not everyone is as cool as you, and many people do go to the great wall.

i think that hammocks at the crag are better than guitars at the crag.

at least hammocks (or those utilizing them) don't strum their accoustic guitars and belt out the 'immigrant song'...badly.

About a month or two ago a group walked by at Solar. They were on their way from the Rebar area to the main wall. The dude was stumming and singing on the way. That was the funniest shit I've ever seen.

I don't even like to bring extra draws to the crag.

I am not buying the erosion argument. Sorry, Jeff. If you don't like them, just say so. It is no big deal to hate on some users. I get it. You don't appreciate "groups", "newer climbers" or "nappy climbers". But forming some sort save the trees argument is embarrassing.

Nappy climbers? Wait a minute. You are on to something....Every time I see a hammock, I can easily spot who is going to be using it. The Nappy climber.

It is a little ironic because the Nappy climber loves trees.

Was up at the gunks earlier this year and saw this episode.

A group has camped out at the base of 3 Pines and Something Interesting. A guy hooks up his hammock, one end tied to a tree and the other, a cam placed about 4' up the rock. His hammock is perpendicular to the cliff and stretches across the entire walking area. He proceeds to fall asleep in his hammock.

This being a popular area had several people passing through, several making comments about this setup. The group had the attitude that they were there and if you didn't like it, tough shit! Use the carriage road! A person came by and walked on the outside of the tree and while passing by, slipped his knife out and very casually cut the cord around the tree.

The guy sleeping came down, woke up, and mumbled something like "what the #^@& happened man!". They all thought the rope just broke under his weight.

The guy who cut the rope continued to walk by where we were climbing with a smile on his face as he slipped his knife back into his pocket.

Those others never had a clue what happened and I don't know if they ever figured it out.

Save the Trees? wtf?
Simply posted an observation and attached a poll to see what others thought.
I am astounded by your ability to figure out my thought processes and my likes and dislikes, especially since we don't even know each other.
I see the impacts at the cliff, caused by climbers, and see a hammock set up as spreading those impacts further into the woods. I've never really noticed them until the last, say, 3 years.
I apologize for publicly posting my opinion, regret doing so, never seem to learn, and will refrain from doing it in the future.

Come on Jeff. Are you serious? You regret posting your opinion because you didn't get the reaction you where looking for? You didn't want anyone to presume you wanted to "save the trees" when your initial post has something about a hammock "stressing" trees?

Why even bother having a dissenting option in your poll if you are going to get bent out of shape?

Wait a minute... I am on your side on this argument. I also don't like the hammock(just not for the same reasons).

Jeff before you roll over. Will you go back and reread the posts. There is some entertaining shit in there. You created it. You started a conversation. You got the ball rolling. I say Kudos to you Jeff!
