I stayed here once it is a 10 min drive outside of New Paltz. The bathrooms hadn't been cleaned, ever. The campground itself was very clean though. It is better than the free camping at Slime and at least their is a shower, filthy as it was.

Nobody here yet has mentioned the Multiple Use Area (MUA). Free camping on the drive from New Paltz to the Gunks, a bit before the "T" on the left. Very primitive, and a bit of a trashy party area, lots of non-climbers wanting to drink beer. I do not recommend it. If you are really low key, you can sleep in your car in the Trapps parking; many people do this, and I have seen rangers turn a blind eye to it as long as it is subtle.

There is also this climber who is trying to have a campground in her yard:

I can't vouch for it personally, but I would definitely check it out.

Finally, just to be aware, culinary water is very hard to come by at the Gunks. Neither of the free campgrounds have spigots.

camp slime was bad last time I stayed there like 8 years ago. There are some new camp grounds that are free (by new I mean in the last few years) and they are fine as long as you hike far enough from the road.

I think it's on 299 just before you get to 44/55.
