No matter what you use, back it up.

I never back up the flat overhand. No need to. Same with a rewoven 8, or double fishermans. The only knot I use that does need a back up is the square knot, which I use a double fisherman's to back up.

A better way of saying that is to just know what you are doing, and be aware of all that is going on, so you know if you need a backup or not...

if you tie a second overhand below the first overhand it bulks the knot up a bit, but it keeps it from inverting. i do this when i'm using new, slick, or skinny ropes... or when i'm completely sketched for no good reason.

yup, rewoven eight is all that I use too. Didn't really know it was called this, but the name makes sense.

trivia question: why is the double fishermans/barrel knot aka the bloodknot?

There is no reason NOT to use the EDK.

Just so we're clear on terminology here, this is the flat eight, and it can kill you!

Thanks!

But to clarify, the "single overhand," "European Death Knot" and "flat overhand" are all the same knot, correct? Simple and easy to tie, and is acceptable. And you do NOT have to back it up. ?

I back it all up. You can think it will never happen to you, but it will. You get one shot.
