To those of you who knew Karl, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I hate melanoma. Claimed a good friend and co-worker of mine years ago. Its not a pretty thing, is any cancer?
I see they are still lopping off mountains in Eastern Kentucky. Electricity isn't cheap.

I don't know any of you, nor did I ever meet Karl but I know what I see.
Karl sounds like he carried the torch for medicine and for service. I can tell you right now by reading his eulogy and remembrance he was going to be a great doc. There are many, many people who will be the worse off because he will not be there to help them. He was going to help a lot of folks who were in need. He was going to make a difference. That is really tough. You ask God, "What the fuck..."
Good on him for walking the walk. Paul Farmer is my hero, too. I bet Karl would feel it a victory and his life served well in one respect if all of his friends read "Mountains Beyond Mountains." I know this is the book Karl read that changed his life, as it did mine. He wanted to make a difference... be his proxy.

Hey All,

My friends and I climbed Creep Show on Tuesday. We saw the memorial and were touched by this show of love and respect. I hope that my life will be remembered like Dr. Karl's! I do feel the God given sprit of life always when climbing at the Red, and your memorial inspires me to count every second of this way of life that most people will never understand as a gift.

All that being said, I removed the anchor draws from the top as they showed significant wear in the rope bucket. I would never take a quickdarw etched with notes to someones departed loved one. We left them at the bottom of the route with a crude note explaining that those were the anchors (and seperated the worn biners from the dogbone to highlight the problem). I'm sorry that I did not think to check the other draws until I left and I wish I was wealthy enough to replace them, but I am not.

Thank you for being good, honerable people!

Very sorry for your loss,

Matt
