I do both. Standing is good balance practice but sitting can feel better especially when your shoes are tight. Its just what I'm in the mood for....

Dumbest thing I have ever heard... Wouldn't you rather sit in the dirt so you can keep your shoes clean??? Unless you have something clean to stand on, you are just jamming dirt into your "high friction dual density rubber brah!" I guess those gym kids just campus everything so it doesnt matter...
Anyways, sitting down and relaxing for a bit before your climb is surley a good thing, this way you start in a state of calmness, not in a state of hopping around the dirt trying to squeeze on a shoe...

Krampus you have a good point. It would make sense that a climber should be able to put his shoes on standing. It is not like a good climber couldn't do this. Its just not a habit of a successful climber.
Here is short list of habits that make sense but are clearly gumball.
1. Having matching draws
2. Not using chalk(not because of ethics but because it doesn't work)
3. Climbing in oversized shoes
4. Craging with Book bags
Here are a few things that successful climbers do that don't really make sense.
1. Blowing chalk off their fingers in a stylish way (the french blow).
2. Ignoring gumbies (they secretly think the gumbie might get hurt and cost them climb time)
3. Using a bowline or double bowline (because it unties so easily?)
I am sorry Krampus. It is a little counter-intuitive but sitting to put your climbing shoes on is correct.

I did number 2 on saturday, there were some scary gumballs, so we left quickly when we finished warming up on things they couldn't do.

Take a look at this gumby story:

What would you have done if put in the same situation?
For those who don't know that climb, the ledge they are standing on is about 150' off the ground and High E is a 5.6 trad line.

I love people that tie bowlines. "Well, you see, I tie this knot because it unties really easily!!"
Probably the LAST thing I want my knot to do is untie easily.
