I did one sprint triathlon and bought a book on triathlon swimming (Triathlon Swimming Made Easy). I never swam before, and my understanding is that there is a big difference between competitive swimming and tri swimming.

a buddy of mine that I swam w/ in high school did an Ironman last fall and he said the swim was totally different b/c you're out in open water w/ a bunch of other people kicking your head in. training in open water would probably be good once you figure out your technique.

Thanks very much for this too!!!! I wish I could swim there all the time; i've been told that she is an excellent coach!! I might try to just do single classes whenever we are down in Lexington because I could definitely use some help!!
My main goal is the Susan Bradley-Cox Tri For Sight!!! Have you ever done it??
It's a great race! I have done the relay, but never the whole event. The good thing about TFS is that it is in a pool, so it will be easier to swim. Tri swimming in open water requires a lot more sighting.
Also, if anyone is ever looking to do any sort of endurance activity (especially tris and marathons) this is a great website for you to check out. My friends Nikki and Gary Ditsch are personal trainers in Lexington and have started a business called Endurance Base Camp. They are very reasonable and will set you up with a team of other people in the area training for the same event you are or will do specific training to you if you prefer (they have a big group together now for the Columbus Marathon and Half Marathon). They also have updated blogs, podcasts, links to endurance-based articles, and a forum to discuss every endurance topic you can imagine (including training, swim technique, injury prevention and nutrition). If you're thinking about training for an endurance event or just trying to get into shape, check them out!
I really believe in their programs and used them to train for the Chicago Marathon last fall. This year I am using them to train for Muncie Endurathon this summer and Marine Corps Marathon this fall.

will you be swimming in a lake or in the gulf for the race? I recommend training in waves if the swim will be in the gulf of mexico--lots of people get seasick if they aren't used to bobbing while swimming.

I also wanted to let you know that I asked my friend Nikki if she gave swim lessons - and she does! She is a fantastic swimmer. She swam for UK and has competed in many triathlons and is training for her second ironman in Louisivlle this fall. She has helped me quite a bit with my swimming and it has helped me a lot!
