I think it would be pretty lame for someone to climb it and keep the cams after reading about it here. If someone finds the booty not knowing there was a post on the forum, then I think its fair game.

so if your friend bailed off a route and and asked you to get his gear back, you would just keep it?

I suppose in this new information age booty is relative. With all the fix gear/draws these days there really isn't much booty. If you keep the gear after reading this post then you won't fit into this "wonderful climbing community" we all think we are apart of.

if it were my friend, yes, i would keep it and maybe let them borrow it from time to time if they were being nice to me. if it were some person i didn't know and i actually climbed trad and got on that route, i'd give it back.
all he can do is hope.

I realize I may never get that gear back. I understood the terms when I bailed on the climb. I would be psyched if someone did retrieve it for me. If someone wants to climb it and not give it back thats their decision. I wont damn someone else for my failure and inability to complete the climb.
You're correct in that I can only hope.

don't think of it as failure. Think of it as motivation to train enough to get up a 5.7.
