That's not the 60-dollar rope deal, FYI. That rope was a 9.7 and so far, both that we have in use are just fine.

It's the new screamers. They are built into to rope so when you hit heavy forces they start elongating.

PMI ropes suck, so if you buy oine, expect poor quality

That is what it looked like to me too. Never seen anything like that in a rope. Strange stuff. Why does PMI suck? Don't they make most of the ropes on the market? I thought there were like two or three manufacturers and then other companies slap their name on the rope.

PMI does not make most of the ropes on the market. Sterling, Bluewater, and Mammut all make their own ropes. Petzl has theirs made by another company which is not PMI.

What you witnessed is a rare but not unheard of "over-twisting" issue that can happen to anyone processing yarns. From the pictures you provided it is perfectly clear that one strand of the 3-strand core cable is grossly over-twisted and "hockles" out of the correct lay of the cable.
