I second trail running. I get bored running, but the trail just is more fun. Plus, you can run in the woods on even the hottest days and the wind is mostly blocked in winter.

I'm with Ho I f ing hate non climbing training. Even when I'm getting paid to do it. I'd rather sit around being bored off my ass than go for a run. But I know that I need to do it to keep my job in the summer. I guess thats my only real motivation.

Danny wrote:For swimming you can try 50 meters on some minute mark for a certain number of reps. For example you can do 50 meters (on the 2 minute mark) for 8 reps. You can play around with the distance, the time and the reps to fit your level. Then you can set goals for decreasing the time interval, reps etc. There are a bunch of other things like this you can do with swimming and I'm sure other types of workouts.
for some reason that sounds substantially less than fun and motivational

How about 25 meters on the 5 minute mark for 2 reps? You can't tell me that doesn't get your juices flowing.

The key is to hate yourself and hate your body and then motivation comes easy. Try to think of it as punishing yourself.

To add to pigsteak, sign up for a race...preferably one that will challenge you. If running three miles isn't that hard for you, but running six would be, sign up for a 10K.

Also, he mentioned running groups in Lexington. I am a big runner, but am SO bad at staying motivated w/o my running friends. If you're interested in Lexington:

T & R @ 5:30 am - Starbucks in Ashland Plaza - about 50 people every morning - all different distances and speeds - aboslutely someone on your level to run with.

Sa @ 7:00 am - Todd's Rd. Stumblers - http://www.toddsroadstumblers.com/

(I'll be happy to tell you more about it if you're intersted!)

If just running is boring to you, mix it up and try a triathlon...or adventure race or something.

I think it takes a few weeks to get into a routine, but once you do, it's even harder to get out of it, b/c you're body starts to crave the workouts.

Good luck!

i'm more of a visual person and for some reason i'm really motivated when i have some kind of chart or graph or calendar to fill in. i'm not necessarily charting progress - just that i did _________ today. then when i skip a day there's a glaring hole in the chart of something not filled in and that makes me sad.

as far as making something that's dull a bit more fun - i like to either watch TV/Movies when I'm on the treadmill if possible - or - something even more entertaining if you're a Johnson Center member... you can watch people climb on the wall while you're on the treadmill.

then again - you could motivate yourself by giving yourself a "reward" when you've accomplished a set goal. For example - for every day you run 2 miles, you get a massage from Mcrib. I'm sure he wouldn't charge you too much - although he was a bit pricey when i called.

Yasmeen wrote:If you're talking about non-climbing working out, I go to the gym before work during the week and in the mornings on the weekends I'm in town. Since I don't get nauseous reading on the ellipticals, that's all the motivation I need-- it gives me an extra hour a day to read, since I wouldn't wake up that early just to sit on the couch with a book. Also, it feels good to use my muscles and get my heart rate up before sitting at my desk for 8 hours straight.

As far as training in the climbing gym, the results are a good motivator, and it's fun to laugh with David and Colleen and watch Kris pretend to get frustrated with us.
