I still have a hard time with the notion that poultry is healthier than red meat. But I grew up on free-range, grass-fed beef from my grandparents farm, which was probably far healthier than the antibiotic-laden, hormone-laden chickens from the factory farm up the road from them. I also had more faith in the cleanliness of my great-uncle's small butcher shop than any large-scale operation.
I have eaten like a vegetarian for months at a time, but will never consider myself truly vegetarian. Bacon and fish are just too yummy. And a diet that includes locally-raised meat is probably more environmentally sustainable than a diet of tofu shipped in from wherever it's made.
what do you eat (or don't eat?)
i'm just awaiting the day when some superior-minded aliens come down with a craving for some of us yummy humans! hopefully they'll recognize the law of "treat others the same you would like to be treated" and let me slide a little closer to the bottom end of the list.
overall though i'm with canuck cause i ain't no real vegetarian! meat is indeed yummy. i think that whoever on this site posted the quote "everything in moderation, including moderation" fits perfectly for me. sometimes you gotta break out and live on the edge, although maybe not going so far as the way that krampus likes to ingest his dose a day of protein!
what the hell was i just talking about again?

efil lanrete... i enjoy the sound, but in truth i find this seductively backward idea to be quite frightening
I think that Canuck has it right. You want to eat healthy don't eat the shit from factory farms. bad for the environment and the body. That for me means eating a lot less meat, drinking less milk since I buy it from local farms who feed their cows grass not corn and buying my eggs from the farmers market. call me a hippy but I sleep better knowing the hens that lay the eggs I eat have beaks.

hippy.
is there any documentation that considers effects of mass-production vs. locally grown diets?
also, i agree that buying locally grown whatever would be great, but i can't imagine that it would be possible for an entire urban population. mass-production is a necessity.

Yo HO!! Just got me a code red and some funyons big dawg!!! SHIT YEAH! - Ray, excited about his breakfast
Personal health is not the only concern. Environmental concerns (area in gulf of mexico where fish can no longer live) concerns for animal welfare (imagine this shit happening to you dog although it probably does happen to del) and the upsurge of food borne illness. All of these are issues with how are food is produced. supporting industrial farming practices is the same as doing nothing about any of these problems.
and ho why do we have to buy shit grown in mexico when it can be grown here. the answer is not that there is no way farms in Kentucky could ever sustain the booming metropolis of Lexington no it has to do with supermarkets wanting to sell the cheapest shit, even if it does have shit all over it that could kill you.
