Hugh, your best bet is to suck it up and get a Mac. More up front cost, but way better performance and reliability, and it'll last you years and years longer than a PC with WAY fewer headaches. I use both Mac and PC, but only because I am forced to use PCs. Night and day difference. Mac is a much better investment.
Get an iMac. They are actually very affordable. You probably qualify for a student discount, too. Oh, and don't add extra RAM when you order the Mac. You can get memory cheaper elsewhere.

Just Mac it up. I used to know, but I've since forgotten how to even wrangle an ornrey PC.

Thanks Pru, and everyone. I am sensing a strong advocacy for Macs. Will take under advisement.
