thats the exact reason i dont hang out at miguels,i cant handle the egos. ask people how there day went and the first thing out of there mouth is i warmed up on some easy 12s. who gives a shit was it a good day thats all i asked. i climb for fun,but i do want to do stuff at ar just above my limit.a good weekend for me is just being able to climb outdoors and hanging with my friends.not spraying about warming up on 5.12

exactly. we lose sight, sometimes, of the reason we got into this sport in the first place.

I think more often than not people are just excited about their sends, not trying to show off or berate a "lesser" climber. I "spray" if I onsite a 5.7 and my friends who climb much harder are pretty damned happy for me when I do. Clearly I'm not trying to show off when I do that - it's just happiness and pride in myself. There's nothing wrong with that, not from anyone.

or maybe, on the other hand, I just have the good fortune to know only cool people...

Good point, but sharing the moment with your friends is a much more acceptable form of "spray". Your climbing crew is your support group and vice versa.

I agree with Lynne, I think it's the climb and the moves that are so cool and what it takes out of us to get up the climb. Face it, we like the way our bodies flow against the rock. Everytime I climb the Grinch (5.4) I gotta tell someone about it cuz it scares the sh*t out of me. Hell yeah I'm gonna spray! Spray about how wigged I get! scarey ass route...

So, I think the real question is, why do we spray? Do we spray because we want to impress people with the grade we climb or because it feels so damn good to climb we can't help but express how cool it is?

For instance, I will spray to my mom, she has no clue what I'm talking about but she understands how climbing makes me feel and sometimes that is what matters.

right, but spraying to a gumby should yield no personal benefit. getting excited about a route with your friends or family is for encouragement, the same encouragement you'll show them when they're ranting about their epic. I'll confess that everytime I do Caver's Route, Foxfire, or Nevermore; any friends that weren't there are in for the full story that night.
