the best way to prepare is to dangle a piece of raw steak in front of an alligator(or dog if you don't have a gator) and when he goes for the meat; hold on. if you can do that then you'll be solid with the other hand.

just climb already. When you fall, your partner won't want to kill you so he/she will likely catch you, assuming you were taught how to use the gear properly.
How you compare may not be as important as to whom you are compared

maybe ploosh means that they don't want to ruin their rope by just taking a shitload of whips on it...most likely with hard catches too.

Ploosh, Take Sax's advice. Overhanging falls are clean, the problem with being a new climber is that you'll struggle on overhanging routes while you're learning technique, building strength and trying to get some endurance, but then again that you'll fall, which is what your were needing to practice anyway.
