I've been chased by a few dogs, but never bitten or snapped at. Though I had to hall ass one time to get away from a pack of two. Not sure if thats the best option for getting away from them though?

My dad's been bit twice while running-once he actually went out into the street, and the dog's leash was long enough to get him. the other time, some stupid woman was walking it without a leash. both times, he got bit badly enough to warrant stitches, and both times, he beat the shit out of the dogs (the walking lady was not too happy, but i think the other dog's owner knew the dog had it coming).
just a lesson to dog owners-your dog bites someone, you'd better be ready for papa smith to beat it into the ground

I'd have used my doggie formula pepper spray but I have stopped carrying it with me.
It's called HALT! and it is good stuff.
at one point i had 3 great danes - we were walking them on a leash and another dog came up and provoked them. needless to say i'm not about to get into a dogfight - especially with dogs that weigh as much as me. i used Direct Stop (a citronella based spray) and i've never seen dogs stop fighting so quickly. the other dog owner was pissed that i sprayed his dog - but none of the dogs needed stitches and i say all's well that ends well.

I was running down Fontaine, guy running with his dog on a leash coming at me, we move over to give each other room, dogs sorta spins around and nips at my hammy just as I pass. Ouch.
Not a bad bite, slobered on my shorts, scraped my skin in a couple of places (no puncture), bruised up and had a little knot by the time I got home.
After I hollered and got the guys attention he appologized, said the dog had it shots we go on our way. I had nothing to write any info down on, so on our way we went. Probabbly not the smartest thing to do. Should've found a way to take down some info.

Advice I once read on the internet (so it must be good): YOu should run (or ride away quickly) from aggressive dogs because it teaches them that joggers/cyclists are fun to chase.
A pepper spray formulated for dogs is best because it teaches them the right lesson: jogger/cyclist taste spicy.
As for a dog owner getting pissed, my opinion is this: if you can't control your dog and protect me, then I will. I won't take a chance with any dog. You never know which ones are overly aggressive. Breed has little to do with training or the lack thereof.
I don't want to kill someone's pet, but if I fear i am going to get seriously hurt I would be decisive in my actions. That's why I feel the pepper spray is best, it is a strong deterrent without causing any lasting harm. If it's not enough then I feel i have the right to defend myself and will neutralize the threat.
Wow, I sound like Dwight Schrute.

pepper spray is not good for dogs. it makes them MORE agressive because they are in pain. a specialy formulated doggie spray (like Direct Stop) are usually citronella based and they interfere with their breathing but do not cause physical pain. in my experience, it made the dogs start sneezing uncontroably and they could no longer continue fighting with each other.
