That's way worse than, say, some writers getting together some tripe publication (R&I and Climbing) to make money selling merchandise. You know, the magazine industry may not be the best place to look for altruism.

I've never read Hooked but how else do you expect magazines to get published?-- Via reader subscriptions? There's not enough money there to keep a publication going.

Granted, some go over bored but I suspect that those won't last long...unless what the reader really wants is just some climbing-gear porn.

If you haven't yet check out Alpinist. I think there is a total of 6 ads per issue. The down side is that is costs like $13 per issue and only comes out quarterly.

I was going to con't with saying that those who don't have as many ads must increase their cover price/decrease their releases. Simple S and D.

I enjoy R&I and Climbing as magazines.
However, the paper version of the NYTimes drives me nuts.

Alpinist is the best mag. i love the big glossy pics and the articals are great. but i can never afford to buy it so i just read it at the book store...
