Wednesday car break update

michaelzr2, the answer is you let it happen. yes, it sucks but at least they'll get a longer sentence. and who's to say they won't try to ram the car or swerve around it or, feeling like a trapped raccoon, lash out at anything in the most violent way possible. always leave your enemies a way out. else they'll become incredibly dangerous. we can't expect the police to be there the whole time, they have a county to patrol. and it's not exactly sneaking around the woods of eastern kentucky.. we're not going to be much more than 50 yards off the road. at the most 100 yards. stumbling upon "farms" isn't going to be a big problem that close up..

I know I couldn't let someone break into a car in front of me and not do something about it. These people have already created a paper trail (tsparks' credit cards), and JR and those guys have witnessed a break in already. I think it would be much more effective to just sit in the parking areas with a 6 pack and a 12 gauge across your lap taking photos of every one and writing down plate numbes. They need to know that they are being watched, that there are no more easy pickings. Then they will go elsewhere. Get active on the defense, not passively re-active.

Also, from hanging out with (and being related to) people who do shit like this, I can tell you most know excatly what the possable jail times, etc are and would probably not even think about any kind of violence, because they know they can get into real trouble then. Although, meth and other drugs / booze can have a bad effects.

Here's one idea: What if we put up signs at all these areas that said:

"WARNING: Break-ins have been occurring in this area, DO NOT leave valuables in your cars. If you witness a break-in call the police at 123-123-1234 and write down any suspicious license plate numbers."

My thoughts are:
1. If people read this, they would not leave wallets and CDs in their cars, or park elsewhere, and keep a ear open for car alarms going off.
2. And, hopefully thieves that see this sign would think "Oh hell, they're onto us - let's go elsewhere".

Bottom line is, when people see a sign like "no trespassing" - they think they're being watched. Hell, maybe we could even put:

"Break-in surveilance cameras in use: beware of criminals"

- it'd be like those radar "robots" the cops use - they always say "Video Equipped" though there clearly isn't any room or place for a video camera on most of them....but it still makes you slow down 90% of the time...

I have spoken to both the Lee Co. & Wolfe Co. Sheriff Depts. and have left a message with the Stanton Ranger to notify local law enforcement of climbers concerns about the break-ins. The Lee Co. Sheriff's office advises anyone who either experiences or witnesses a break-in to call 911 dispatch. The Wolfe Co. Sheriff's office advises in their Co. to call their 24 hr. dispatch @ 606-668-6757 or to call the Kentucky State Police. The KSP Emergency Hotline is 1-800-222-5555.

I have to agree some warning signs would be a great idea...ESP. for those folks(and there are many) that don't get on this web page and have no idea that his or her car and personal belongings are at great risk in the southern region.

We were at Miguel's today and one of the guys kindly let us know about the breakins. I think they're trying to help spread teh word too.

I agree with posting signs, they with most likely get vandalized. It does take money but I'd be willing to chip in. Traveling climbers would get the information. It may have a trickle down affect with the local businesses also. Once the tourist start seeing signs posted everywhere they might start choosing somewhere else to vacation! Business people get pissed because its slow, they complain to the local commerce dept, sheriff, etc. Could work.

Long term plans are needed to take care of the problem.

...maybe I'm just a pacifist, but it seems funny that people are quick to spend hours hiding in a car with a video camera, ready to beat someone's ass, but balk at the idea of putting a sign up, or taking the time to call law enforcement (as Captain S did).

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with a little scare tactics, but there should be some prevention too I think...
