It's more of a hassel, and I always get a little OCD about forgetting my keys at the crag, never mind wallet, etc., but I'm going to do it from now on. It's a bummer we have to.
you should also leave the car unlocked and open, including the trunk. Remember these dumb-ass red necks(and I hope they are reading this) will break your windows even if the car is unlocked and they're way too freaking stupid to use the trunk pop to open the truck and will pry the trunk open with a crow-bar.

only real way to protect yourself is to leave anything of any value at your camp/home and leave the car unlocked and open including the truck and all glove and console boxes. The red necks won't steal your car, they can't sell that very quickly to get cash to buy meth...the want cash, CD's, anything they can sell quickly for cash.

another option which has been suggested to me by the security arm of my company is an ear shattering (literally!) alarm in the car. It can be so loud that the jackasses have to drop whatever is in their hands and cover their ears... That will make it hard for them to take anything, eh? Though they have never installed this type of alarm in a car (just in buildings).

I'm going to look into the cost of rigging my car this way. I don't keep valuables in my vehicle when I'm climbing, but I have a car top carrier. If they bust into that, the mechanism to keep it closed will likely no longer work...

Given the opportunity, I would totally shoot these fuckers.

Well, I've just decided that after this weekend that I'm not going to the Southern Region for a very long time. All the great climbs down there are NOT worth the crap I've went through the last couple of days.

Car thief in some back alley of Slade, KY:

"Hey, I need my fix, you want to buy any of these CD's?"

"Uhhh... Journey's greatest hits, got it, Madonna, Madonna, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, got that last week, A-ha, Billy Idol, Duran Duran, nope, got all those too. When are you gonna get something new?"

Don't want your car broken into? Go get a bunch of Yanni and John Tesh CD's and spread 'em on your front seat.

Ummmm, I am thinking Journey, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, etc WOULD guarantee that your car is safe from thieves...just me, or are those artists just as "sad" as Tesh and Yanni?

Came across this thread surfing around.
I Just read a book about the civilian use of lethal force.
Basically, it says that in almost every state, if you shot a theif who was
1) not in your home
2) Non-threatening (I.e, did not attack you personally)

That you would be tried (an likely convicted) of first degree murder.
Not to downplay your anger, but anyone serously considering waiting around with a gun should consider this:

If you wait around with a gun, and brandish your gun to them someone who is not threatening personal harm, in court you will be seen as the aggressor, and would be charged as such.

If shoot the guy, you may be eligable for first degree murder, since you started the confrontation.

Last I checked, KY still has the death penalty.

Best thing may be the deafening car alrms, and survalence equipment.
