Judge Trude is the judge that heard the rrgcc/charmane lawsuit, and decided in our favor. From what I heard, he is a pretty good judge, but maybe not super harsh? He is also the one that heard the Woody Haralson hemp case.
They have the same problems at T-wall, with the same kinda of anger and stuff, but it is really hard to make actual long term progress. Cars in the southern region are easy prey, and there will always be people willing to risk a very minor offence for easy money. I think that break in's on FS land have gone way down, in part because of new targets with climbers, and in part because break ins on FS land are federal, and thus have stricter sentencing.
The only true long term solution that I can see is actually have a person *patroling* the areas on a very regualar basis.
Jail times aren't that stiff for petty theft. Bottom line, these people do 90-days or a year depending upon what they're caught with and who convicts them. Remember, criminal cases = jury trial. Jury of your peers = people around you. How much time do you think they get?

And how many that get 90 or 365 days serve anywhere near that? Nope, long term solution is more along the lines of very visiable, consistant patrols/security. You have to make it much harder to break into the cars, not worry about catching the people that do. If there is not a good opertunity, then they will go elsewhere.

Agreed. The incentive to rob is greater than the danger of spending 60-days in jail or whatever they're getting popped for.

OK, then it is pretty obvious when you see someone at a climbers parking lot who just doesn't seem to belong there, but I personaly would like to know what these guys with a history of breaking into vehicles look like.
If I see them, I will make it obvious that I'm not going anywhere until they leave.
As crazy as they seem to be, it might also be good to know who I am dealing with if I decide to have words with them.
IE- I might not go off on some whacked out ****head who likes to hold .38s to peoples heads.
I'm from Estill county and I know of Judge Trude well. His record speaks for its self because he never seems to convict anyone. The people that really need to be in jail or just taken out in the street and shot end up getting out on shock probation. Someone just need to catch this guy in the act and shoot him. The break-ins will stop then.

You gotta hate a judge that doesn't order thieves summarily executed....
I like the idea of a shuttle/security van... people leave their cars at Miguel's or some other location, get shuttled to various crags and have FSRs or some other radio/cell phone to communicate with central dispatcher or the van driver.
You have fewer cars in remote locations, and you have a driver regularly patrolling in a highly visible vehicle showing up in places the law enforcement fellows never go. You might even use volunteers as drivers that have EMT etc. experience. Everybody who uses services signs waivers that releases the service from any legal, emotional, spiritual, psychological, equatorial or any other kind of liability. Just a thought.
