Break in at Shady Grove
I can't seem to let this go.
Not much pisses me off more than a thief.
Can anyone remember awhile back when a gentleman from Lee County introduced himself on here saying he was in charge of tourism, or some such thing, and was interested in hearing any kind of feedback from us climbers?
If someone can find that post, I would like to send him an email about this subject.
Everyone hates to see someone get broke into, but we never end up doing anything about it.
I want to do something.
I will start with him, and will be contacting Beattyville city council members, Chamber of Commerce, and Mayor.
Haven't been climbing much lately, but now I pay Lee County taxes, and really don't want a thief breaking into our place.

Jeff--
His name was Larrey Riddle, but he worked for Wolfe County, not Lee County.

"You're name isn't Rio, but I don't care for sand."
I have never heard of "chronic brain syndrome" but it sounds really devastating.
Up here across the Ohio River in Indiana we have another name for chronic brain syndrome:"fucking stupid syndrome" or its medical acronym:FSS.

I try to be a good man but all that comes
of trying is I feel more guilty.

here we go again... Jeff, I'm with you. Let's do something about this.
My new company has several different divisions. One of them is security and surveillance. Who is willing to pony up some money to rig a couple of cars with silent alarms and cameras so that when they are touched (or whatever) the theives don't hear it but the owner of the car can be paged and we can try to catch these fuckers in the act?
I don't have a clue what it would cost, but if enough people are willing to invest, I think we can plant some decoy vehicles and finally do something about this. I don't have a lot of time to read the forum lately, so post here AND PM me and let's get a headcount and a dollarcount.
As far as what to do when these low lifes are caught, I think it's obvious it's not a high priority for law enforcement. If we do this at the high target areas on a long term basis, soon it will become obvious to these creeps that they aren't going to get away with this much longer. The downside is getting back to the vehicle ASAP when paged, and the potential risk of confrontation. I don't have the answers to how to do this, but I'm sure we can finally figure this out if we are serious as a community.
Sunshine, I'm very sorry to hear this happened to you. I think it's only a matter of time before most of us feel your pain in a very personal way.

Ok, here's my idea.
Like Disco said, the law and judge or either afraid, or friends. They aren't going to do anything to these guys.
I'm not going to take the law into my hands esp. in lee co ky.
BUT, if someone who might have ties to law enforcement files (hint), or Wes (who seems to be able to find about anything on the net), could come up with mug shots, we could make up flyers with pictures, and something along the lines of "If you see any of these people at the crag, don't leave your car, or you will probably be ripped off".
Doesn't seem like they like an audience while they are breaking into vehicles.
Post 'em at Miguels, at RRO, at parking lots, wherever...get the word out.
I don't see how it could hurt.
disclaimer for the politicly correct:
No hard proof that these folks are actually responsible, but it seems they don't have a problem screwing people over.
Pictures of the thieves are a great idea too.
