Dependence and Addiction

Post by marathonmedic »

I came across this and it reminded me of my climbing. Kind of scary.

Substance Dependence--maladaptive pattern of substance use devined as 3 or more of the following signs in 1 year:
1. Tolerance
2. Withdrawal
3. Substance taken in larger amounts than intended
4. Persistant desire or attempts to cut down
5. Lots of energy spent trying to obtain substance
6. Important social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced because of substance use
7. Use continued despite of knowing the problems it causes

Substance Abuse--maladaptive pattern leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. Symptoms have not met criteria for substance dependence. 1 or more of the following in 1 year:
1. Recurrent use resulting in failure to fulfill major obligations at work, school or home
2. Recurrent use in phycially hazardous situations
3. Recurrent substance-related legal problems
4. Continued use in spite of persistent problems caused by use.

yeah, addiction labels it about right. addicitons are progressive and where climbing comes in that's a good thing: teen years addicted to narcotics, twenties - alcoholism, thirties - caving, education, and running, early forties - gambling and climbing, present - climbing and bicycling. so i'm going in a better direction i guess. healthier anyway :)

I get extremely grumpy if I don't get my climb time. Evil grumpy.

Why do I have a hard time imagining you grumpy? You'd still be smiling.

And cute................
What I love about running is you can meditate while running. It's a peaceful place.

My girl friend no longer asks what did I do to my hands, my family knows not to even ask about sucking up two weekends in a row, it takes a death to stop me from bouldering on Wednesday, and it has only been a year since I started climbing.

I debated as to weather I had an addiction or was dependant and ended up selecting addiction. After reading the symptoms that constitute and addiction and climbing abuse problem I knew that was where I fell. How does this happen? One day I was a normal person now I am always thinking about my past weekend of sends and what I want to climb next, and when I can get out to do it.
Lest we all forget... climbing is a mostly meaningless pursuit that we do for fun.
