The thing is that you see them everywhere. Some are on the easy routes and some are on the moderates. What are these people doing? Hanging, feeling around and then ticking so they don't have to remember the two or three holds in front of their face. FIGURE IT OUT PEOPLE. MOST OF THE ROCK AT THE RED DOESN'T GET RAINED ON SO THOSE TICK MARKS WILL STILL BE THERE YEARS FROM NOW!!! Some of these climbs probably haven't seen much water on them for over 1000 years.

I wonder if it might not be a bad idea to start putting up signs at Miguel's, RRO, etc., reminding people that if they're going to tick, please keep it to a minimum since they stay around for a very long time.

Besides, if you tick everything you don't learn how to read the rock. Stay in the gym.

If one feels that strongly against it, perhaps in addition to complaining about all the tick marks...one can carry a brush and remove them.

Its like seeing a piece of garbage on the ground...and everyone just walks by and complains about how disgusting it is that someone else left it there, but no one is willing to pick it up.

I dont know if I would chalk that up to the effectiveness of the tick mark

I brush tick mark that I don't like. I add tick marks of various sizes when I feel the need. I brush some holds, while not brushing others. Pretty much, I am selfish that way.

Also needs an F and H so we can be sure if its a foot or hand hold. Climbing can be to confusing.

I've tried brushing them but they just fade a bit.

One time, Jared had a tick go in between his toes.... it was there for days and days and he keeps scratching it. It never came out and got infected. Even after it finally healed, it still left a tick mark. I really hate looking at it. YUCK!
