Enough with the TICK MARKS already

Post by Astroman »

Alright so finally I can't take it anymore. What is with all the HUGE tick marks these days? I'm fine with a little light chalk dabbing to help find the sweet spot but these long thick stripes have gotten out of control. Some are so offensive you can spot 'em 70 feet up a route...

Instead, why don't we just start using colored gym tape to mark EVERY hold and dumb the routes down for all the apparent morons out there that evidently need a total road map to climb here.

i managed to not see the huge clipping jug on Too Many Puppies despite three huge tick marks, so i question their effectiveness

I agree with ya, man. I was in the Southern Region a few weeks ago and the tick marks were just like a taped route in the gym. But I'm not putting up the routes so if the FA'er chooses to tick 'em up then who am I to complain?

However, here's another factor...
Us and Them's upper section is a total choss pile so if you pull off anything but the ticked holds you have a chance of pulling down a handful (this happened to Jeremy and the rock hit him on his own head). In this case, it was pretty nice having the tick marks there.

another thing that's crazy about ticking is that if you're working a route, you're probably going to know where a hold is anyway. i don't get it.

Instead of a big stripe the tick marks should by marked R or L so we all know which hand to use.

How about a chalk clean up day? Just as important as a trail day in my opinion.

I agree. THe marks now are so big, that its hard to tell the difference between the X's and the tic marks. My oppinion is that it is probobly 3 or 4 people doing this. There is no way this level of stupidity could be widespread.

How about we have a 'find out who is using the giant stripe markes and flog them day?'
