A Newbie's Equipment

Post by batscout »

Need equipment advice

I'm new, hardly climbed at all
Think I'll stay with it
Don't want to fall
I've bought a new harness
Also some shoes
Now need the chalk mess?
Please give me the news.
What about some draws?
Please calm down your guffaws
I could use some applause
Just lay down the laws
What do I need?
Should I desire plier, guy wire, attire, indeed?
Help!

I wouldn't worry about much more than shoes, harness and chalk bag for now. Just concentrate on the climbing right now. Find experienced climbers to climb with - they should be able to set you up to climb safely on toprope. As you learn more you will accumulate what you need. Enjoy!

Yeah McGlone's right. Everyone wants to run out and buy all this new shit, but you don't need it to get started. What you need are: shoes, a harness and a partner with some experience. It is guaranteed that your partner will have draws, a rope, etc. However, if you're only toting shoes and a harness you should offer to carry some of your partner's gear.

In the future you can buy the gear you want, and you'll know what you do and do not like. If you feel compelled to buy something then just get a locking biner and a belay device.

all of the above is true - climb, get experience, make friends, enjoy the red! :) when you are new every day is a better climb than the last day was. it's an exciting time 4 sure.

I say abuse other peoples gear has long as you can. Wait till you have been climbing for a while and you know what you need.

movie quote: the princess bride. fezic and the spaniard on the boat to gilderoy.

yeah, i loved it.

batscout, best gear you can find are solid people to climb with. but if you feel concerned you shouldn't doubt your ability to ask why verbally.

good luck. hope to see you around!
