pig... a pitch can be from 40 ft. - 300 ft. it just depends on the route and also how long of rope you have. i have a friend that did el cap in nine pitches with a 200m rope.

ynp..I realize that....the point was that a standard rope is 150-200 feet, and that, typically is what is meant by a pitch. granted, I know that pitches stop at all distances, but to gauge a discussion, don't you need a baseline? someone who does 10 150 pitches and someone who does 10 40 foot pitches is not equivalent...

when I climb at a shorter cliff, I am careful to never call a route a pitch, esp if it barely uses a quarter of the rope....just my way of keeping things straight in my head....

maybe a better question would be "how many vertical feet do you climb in a day"

Pitches and feet climbed are not the best way to judge how much/hard you climbed for the day. 20 pitches of first tier routes at fotress is no where near the same as 5 pitches on the undertow wall. So, I never worry so much about total pitches. I focus more on "personal limit" type pitches (routes you have to really work to get/or will fall on). I like to get 3-4 of those in per climbing day usually. Although I also enjoy doing more volume of easier routes as well.
