Coolest Place in Muir Valley

Post by pawilkes »

I've only been down to Muir once back in September but looking at the online guide I am tempted to get back there and get on as many .11 sport lines as my hands will allow. I'll be at the Red on the weekends over the summer and was wondering if there was any particular wall that stays cooler than others (ie really shady, west facing for morning climbing, overhanging, etc) if anyone wants to go send like 5 or 6 .10's and .11's in a day over there with me this summer let me know, im excited!

In the mornings many of the west facing cliffs will be shaded: Tectonic Wall, Johnny's Wall, The Great Wall, Sunnyside, etc.

Late in the afternoon east facing cliffs such as The Great Arch, The Solarium, The Sanctuary, The Inner Sanctum, etc. will be in the shade.

Let me know if you have any other questions about Muir Valley and I'll be happy to answer them. There are many cool waterfalls and places to take a dip also. Often we wade the creek in between various hollows while chasing the sun or seeking the shade. We climb there year round and there are ALWAYS plenty of places to climb in the rain, sun, cold, etc. :D

The climbs near the Hideout area (to the right of the Great Wall) stay cooler for some reason. Often, there is a gentle current of cool air blowing out from the cavern where the old hemlock, Methusula, sits. My guess is this is from a breathing cave, but we have yet to find the entrance.

It's Methusula. It breathes.

Seriously, it's impossible now to be struck in awe looking at that tree.

The name "Solarium" doesn't really conjure up images of a shady crag for me. Hmmm.

Solarium fries in the am, yet after one or so comes into shade. It was pretty cool up there up until a few weeks ago.
