When is the best time to eat before working out?
Lynne, sooooo sorry to hear that. Like you, Gretchen, I rarely take anything that doesn't belong to me. If I do have to call it quits for a few days, I generally pop right back into shape. A few months; however..................trashy, Di, trashy! Paying for that! Get better soon, you guys!
What I love about running is you can meditate while running. It's a peaceful place.

I finally learned flip turns last night. I definitely can see how they save so much time. I'm loving the swimming but it is so tiring. I thought I was gonna pass out after I was done with my 2.5 mile run and then 1000 meters. I don't know if I completely understand the intervals that you guys were telling me about (Corey and Lynne). What I've been doing is 100 meters then rest until I get to 1000. I guess what I don't understand is doing 50's and 100's. Saturday I'm gonna work on technique, my kicking sucks a root. Oh yeah, I'm definitely buying a cap soon. I think my 'fro scared the lifeguard when I got out of the pool last night.
heh-heh. Yeah, flip-turns can cut seconds off a lap even if nothing else changes. For you, having hair longer than "high and tight", I'm surprised you didn't already HAVE a cap. The interval training while swimming is very similar to what I suggested for your running. Swim hard for a period, then swim slowly for 1/3-1/4 of that time interval, then back to hard. Hard part with intervals in the water is keeping track of your time. Another way might be to swim 75 hard, 25 relaxed and cycle THAT way continuously.

I finally started pushing myself with swimming, and yeah, it's definitely much more of a workout when you don't take a break every 50-100 meters... (I know, I'm a wimp) I did 500 meters without stopping-- freestyle up, backstroke back (25-meter laps), and it was definitely tough!

Hey Sita, how's the swimming coming along? I've started swimming with a couple of my friends who were on swimteams all through their school years, and it's helped a lot using the kickboards and the poolbuoys. I'm still working on the flip turn and getting better at fly, but it's so fun when you actually notice improvement! I'm finally not breathing every stroke.

Swimming is going good. I tested my time the other day and did the 17 lengths in 12:20 (I will need to do it in 12). I have been forcing myself to breathe every three strokes to get used to it and its getting easier. I'm still sketchy about flip turns but I know it'll get better. I've been swimming about 3000 meters a week so I'm definitely finding it getting easier and easier.

HA HA Luca - good try! I never offered to teach you to swim. I offered to swim with you and recommended swimming for you as you recover - but I didn't know you still need to learn. I do recommend learning, too, but I really don't want to have anything to do with teaching swimming to be honest. It's quite a commitment of time that I simply do not have. You will be much better off with formal swimming lessons anyway. I've never taught adults, only children (and it's been a great many years since I did that). However once you learn, I would be more than happy to work out with you!! I swim at the Hurstbourne YMCA, lately usually in the mornings around 7:30 AM 2 weekday mornings per week. I can also probably work out a weeknight once a week if that's easier.
How are you coming along with your ankle?? Have you started any PT yet? Do you know when you can climb again? God I feel for you.. I know JUST what it's like to be out with an injury.

The ankle is healing up fine, albeit slowly. I started PT the last week of Jan and started out walking w/ 10 lbs of pressure w/ the walking boot on. She also had me do some stretching exercises during that time. Two weeks later she bumped me to 30 lbs of pressure w/ the boot on and then a week ago Friday she told me to stay out of the boot. I can now stand on it w/o any pain, I handle the 30 lbs pretty well, and I've gained a lot of flexability back. If I'm up a lot and not doing any exercises then it still turns a light shade of blue and it'll swell. I think that's because I've got some calcium deposits built up around my Talus. I go to the Ortho on Wed and hopefully will find out more swelling and see if I can move up from 30 lbs.
I had a buddy of mine's girlfriend teach me how to swim two summers ago, but I'm just very good at it. I probably just need to do it more rather than getting lessons.

Sounds like you are doing good with the PT. Are you balancing yet on that foot? That was one of the best things I did in my ankle PT. Basically just balance on your gimpy ankle. NEAR A WALL in case you lose your balance of course. At first use the wall gently, then don't, and then when you are really good, close your eyes and also lift your other foot/knee higher. You will work all the little muscles in your feet in trying to maintain balance and they will be key for protecting that injury. It's amazing how much more you'll work them when your eyes are closed!
So I just got a new job today, which starts in 2 weeks, and I don't know if I'll be able to swim mornings anymore. We should definitely try to work something out when you are ready though. I need the extra movtivation and want to try to swim 2 times per week, 1 minimum.
