unlocking the reverso
paul, the reverso usually comes with some papers that explain such things.

you know, i kept those papers for a while and i think i still have them hanging around somewhere. the thing is, i think they're the same ones that are one petzl's website and they don't say anything about lowering when it's set up for autolocking.

You could also use just the sling attached to the harness to break it loose to keep yarding in slack on a climbing second.
Looking thru the literature provided with the product (and on the website) it also gives you details on how to set up the reverso in autoblock mode with two biners for a "heftier" person... And how to work loose a locked reverso by manipulating one of the biners...
And if you still don't like the reverso and don't want to throw away your money because this is all too much fuddle-duddle, use it like any other non-locking tube or plate belay device to belay the second by re-directing thru the anchor.
And if you still don't want it, I can PM you my mailing address.
Side note: I love my reverso, but I got lucky and learned the above and other things by using a gi-gi (no, not a gri-gri). A lot of the same concepts applied to both; try the advice above before you give up on it...

To unlock it, attach a sling to the locking beaner and either step on it or sit on it. This takes a bit of force if there's still weight on the rope. Make sure you're still holding the brake line or it's gonna unlock and drop fast.
If you're going to have to lower someone, it's much easier to have them unweight the rope (or escape the belay if the climber can't get off the rope) and flip the reverso around to work as a standard ATC.

ok.. thanks powen01, that's pretty much what i was thinking had to happen.. except for the italian hitch..!? i'm assuming that's just a backup for the brake hand..? and dhoyne, that sling still has to be threaded through the anchor to pull up on the biner.. right?
