well said lurkist...I definitely missed that point. the community is way important. I was trying to speak to the specific activity of climbing. many other "communities" of men have the same feeling we do as climbers. men go to church to hang with other men. they fall in love wiht a football team , and watch games and drink beer together. they tear apart and then fix cars...etc. it is not the climbing that is important, but truly, the community.

This reminds me of a conversation at the crag last week. We were talking about how the majority of the people we know, we've met through climbing. People that I used to consider really good friends don't want to have anything to do with me now. I quit the sorority and it's like, "Oh, we can't hang out with you anymore." Now a very large percentage of my friends are climbers. So, that makes me wonder...If I stop climbing, would you all stop being my friends?

The community is one of the things that I really like about climbing. I climb for me, but it's so nice to be around other people that like to climb and have other things in common with you.

kentucky sarah..reality is, yes, you wouldn't see these people as much. they would still be at the crag, and you'd be back at the sorority. maybe you dropped the sorority chicks, since you found a new passion. you are the one that left what brought you all together in the first place.

Paul3eb:

I see what you mean. I don't think that people are even capable to wrap their heads around God's Word or God for that matter. I just didn't understand what you meant. I guess my insight is that while I am learning the sport there are many out there who have done the 11s and 12s and 13s outside and don't understand anymore people who just climb in a gym. It's kind of a "you ought to be humble because you once struggled on 8s 9s and 10s. Don't make others feel inferior to you because you have advanced so much" thing. I don't know man, all this stuff is detrimental to the sport. We can all help each other out without being judgmental and all. True.

looking forward to that pizza at miguels with all of you...

that's funny lurkist... I have often said that a lot of climbers are just physically fit dungeons and dragons nerds... they have little social grace and when the topic moves away from climbing, they really can't hold it very long without becoming very uncomfortable. So be it... we all need community.
