top rope routes

Post by dw »

I want to take my children to the area for spring break. Where would I find routes that I can top rope by myself so I can belay my children. :?: 13 and 11 year olds.

DW: I don't have great answers, but a little here may be useful:
Here are a few stats for you about the Red.
1. There are about 1320 routes (my personal estimate)
2. More than 2/3 of these are Trad routes
3. Therefore only about 1/3 are Sport routes
4. From what I have seen so far, there are less than 1/10 of all those routes that can be toproped
5. From this 1/10, a little less than 1/2 can be setup / anchored safely by novice climbers.
Bottom line, there are only 40 some odd routes that you can top rope with ease.
Since there are no guide in existance pointing out these routes, the short answer was really to go somewhere else. Please don't take offence to this, but indeed, the Red isn't really THE best place for setting up a top rope.

At best, you will find one route easily top roped, and then will have to hike back out, drive a bit more, hike up, and set up yet another route at another cliff.

While the Red is totally beautiful, here's what I recommend for your best enjoyment:
1. Come here and try Miguel's pizza.
2. Come here and hire a guide to setup top ropes and bring you to cool places.
Two places comes to mind. They are both family owned and operated:
a) Torrrent Falls
b) RRO: Red River Outdoors

Hope this helps you out a bit...
! Enough with all that detestation ALREADY !
Smile & be thankful for what you have.

Junkyard at the New River Gorge is the best place for toproping novices.

The Motherlode has easy toprope access, but the routes might be a bit steep for the kids.

Just go to Roadside or Torrent and ask a neighboring party to belay you. Most people you meet will be friendly and won't mind helping you out. You could ask around at Miguels to see if any other families are climbing. Might be able to team up.

I have the same question as the man at top. I go to uk and don't have the time to go anywhere else and I don't have enough equipment to lead yet. Can anyone give me the name of any routes to toprope by myself?

I agree with sax. Everybody's pretty good to each other around here. Maybe bring your draws and some climbing tape. Have party one switch draws and lower on their rope to deck. then, tape rope ends together (use a pretty good length of tap/rope ends) and pull second rope through your draws and party one wont have to clean anchors. Please toprope through draws.

Best bet is to hire a guide.
